Welcome to Hula with Lisa

Welcome to Hula with Lisa, a space for beginner-friendly study of hula and culture in the Raleigh, NC area. Hula is a beautiful mode of storytelling about love (aloha), the earth, the ocean, and the spirit of all living things.Dr. Lisa Grable is an educator and a student of hula and Hawaiian culture.

Here you will find upcoming workshop and event details and resources to help your exploration of hula and Hawaiian culture.

Lisa is an educator and student of hula. With a PhD in Science Education, she has research interests in physics, technology integration, and middle school education. It all means searching for knowledge, and that includes dance! She began dancing ballet at six years old, with Madame Solange Binda (see more about Madame Binda here!), and continuing with tap and hula. Lisa has studied hula over 20 years with Kealohalani Wright, Kuana Torres Kahele, and Kau’i Dalire.  In the last decade, she has been with Kanoe Miller (more about Kanoe Miller). Kanoe was a student of Maiki Lake.

Spirit in nature, the Hawaiian way
With wisdom passed down through generations, I am grateful to share the love and power of indigenous Hawaiian culture embodied in hula with you.  I will share the concept of ‘aumakua, an animal that guides and inspires the family. Also, I will share kinolau, the respect for the plants as they represent Hawaiian deities. And we can learn some hula dance vocabulary. Let’s hula!
